The legend of the Blackwing pencil: The story of an iconic tool through the lens of creativity

How did the American Blackwing pencil become an indispensable companion for artists and writers in the 1930s, and why does its legend live on today?

Few objects exist that are tied to as many stories and legends as the Blackwing pencil. This simple yet extraordinarily special pencil has inspired the greatest creative geniuses of the 20th century for over a century. The Blackwing was not just a writing instrument, but a tool of creation that revealed much about its user's personality and passion.

The cult of the Blackwing pencil

In the mid-1930s, the Blackwing 602 was born in the workshop of the American Eberhard Faber Pencil Company, which immediately stood out from the crowd with its appearance and functionality. Its glossy black lacquer, rectangular metal eraser holder, and replaceable eraser made it unique – however, the secret lay in the pencil's soft, silky graphite tip, which allowed for smooth, continuous line work.

The slogan „Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed” was not just a marketing phrase, but a description of a real experience that promised fast and efficient work.

Originally intended for shorthand writers and stenographers, it soon spread among artists and writers. John Steinbeck used over 300 Blackwing pencils when writing his East of Eden work. Chuck Jones, the animator of the Looney Tunes legendary characters, chose this pencil, while composers Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim also used it to jot down their manuscripts.

According to American animation historian Charles Solomon, Disney animator Shamus Culhane requested to be buried with his Blackwing pencil. Nothing could express the brand's devotion better than this.

The era of scarcity

The significance of the Blackwing transcended everyday use: it was a spiritual companion, a tool that connected the masters of creativity. Despite its simplicity, or perhaps because of it, it became a status symbol in creative professions.

However, in the late 1990s, production unexpectedly ceased. After several changes of ownership (Eberhard Faber → Faber-Castell → Sanford), the Blackwing reached the end of an era. A technical problem also hastened the sad decision to cease production: the machine that made the pencil's unique metal eraser holder broke down, and due to low production volume, it was not worth manufacturing a new machine.

By then, however, the „Blackwing myth” was booming: fans were willing to pay over $40 for a single unused pencil on eBay. In the era of scarcity, the Blackwing was no longer just a writing instrument – it became a coveted collector's item, a symbol of analog, freehand creation, and of course, the prices of original pieces skyrocketed.

Rebirth in California – the Palomino Blackwing

In 2007, the California Cedar Products Company (CalCedar) skillfully revived the legend. The company's Palomino-branded pencils were made from premium quality cedar and Japanese graphite, and they resembled the original Blackwing so much that some artists worldwide began demanding an official return.

Thus, in 2010, the Blackwing brand was reborn. The new series became a worthy heir to the original:

  • Blackwing 602 – the classic writer's pencil with medium-soft graphite
  • Blackwing Pearl – softer, silkier, ideal pencil for drawing
  • Blackwing Natural – harder pencil lead, recommended for more precise line drawings
  • Blackwing Volumes – limited, thematic edition pencils that pay tribute to certain creators, artistic movements, or historical events with a special graphite blend and unique appearance

Blackwing is no longer just a pencil, but a way of life. The brand's philosophy celebrates conscious, freehand, slow, calm, and deep creation, the joys of „analog” experiences, and the power of handwritten thoughts – creating balance amidst the noise of the digital world.

Blackwing pencils do not require special treatment – just attention. The cedar wood exterior can be perfectly sharpened with any good quality sharpener (e.g. Blackwing One-Step Long Point), and replacement packs for the erasers are also available.

For those who write a lot, I recommend the Blackwing 602 pencil; for drawing, hand sketches, or notes, the Pearl is the best choice. The Natural type is more of a precision tool, while the various versions of the Volumes are true collector's delicacies – available in limited quantities, with special stories and appearances.

„Blackwing is not just a pencil. It is the moment of birth of an idea in your hand.”
Austin Kleon, writer and visual artist
